John Gomperts today assumes the president and CEO post of America’s Promise Alliance, guiding the organization’s day-to-day work and the strategic vision of its 10-year Grad Nation campaign. His previous roles and accomplishments speak to his ability to lead this challenging effort as he has a track record of success in both government and the nonprofit sectors.

America’s Promise Alliance will host a series of Business-Education Collaborative Summits, bringing together local and national business, education, nonprofit and philanthropic leaders to learn about the latest data on the economic impact of the high school dropout crisis and how they can work together more effectively to improve schools and communities. The first summit will be held in Charlotte, NC on June 11-12 with three others in Boston, MA on September 13-14; Denver, CO on December 3-4 and Los Angeles, CA in January 2013. They are sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, State Farm® and Target.

Chronic absenteeism in American schools is a largely unnoticed and unmeasured problem affecting the educational outcomes of millions of students and undermining critical school improvement efforts, according to The Importance of Being in School, a new report by Johns Hopkins University School of Education researcher Dr. Robert Balfanz. Conducted with support from the Get Schooled Foundation, the report was released May 17 at a congressional briefing and at Education Writers Association’s national conference.

As part of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service, Points of Light, Chase and ITT Exelis are hosting a two-day session on June 17-18 in Chicago for individuals who are interested in community-based solutions for meeting the needs of service members, veterans and their families. During the Community Blueprint Summit for Change, participants will explore how to bridge together military and civilian communities to build a stronger more united nation.

The National Center on Time and Learning has launched a new initiative in conjunction with the Ford Foundation about expanded learning time. The Time to Succeed Coalition (TSC) is a diverse coalition of Americans working to ensure that all children in our nation’s high-poverty communities have the time they need to succeed in school and beyond. TSC has a simple mission: to inspire and motivate communities across the country to add more time to a redesigned school day and year, giving teachers the time they need to do their jobs and help disadvantaged students get the education they need to succeed.

The little red wagon associated with America’s Promise Alliance sprouted from the symbolism it carries with the promise of young people. During the 1997 Presidents' Summit for America’s Future in Philadelphia, the symbol was unveiled to signify the vision of America’s Promise and the work to be carried out in the years to come. To celebrate the symbolism of the red wagon and its recent 15th Anniversary, America’s Promise invites everyone to post wagon photos on its Facebook page.

The 2012-13 HandsOn Corps VISTA program aims to improve student outcomes through a multi-pronged approach to community engagement and service. HandsOn Corps VISTA members will develop sustainable systems for parental and community engagement that directly improve student success, support teacher-led efforts and initiatives, provide community and parent enrichment opportunities, and engage students in service to their school and community. The deadline to apply for the Points of Light HandsOn Corps VISTA program is May 14, 2012.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW) will unveil a new 13-city case study on May 15. The report will examine school boards across the country and highlight rural and urban districts with diverse school boards to uncover the extent to which the business community has played a role in school governance. The report will be discussed during a May 15event titled From the Boardroom to the School Board: Why Business Engagement in School Governance is Important.

The National Summer Learning Association’s Summer Learning Day 2012 will take place on June 21. Summer Learning Day is a national advocacy day that showcases local summer learning programs and highlights the importance of summer learning. Events celebrating the occasion will take place the week of June 21 and throughout the summer. To assist communities with planning their events, NSLA is offering a series of archived webinars, a planning toolkit and more.

America’s Promise grew out of the 1997 Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future, when the nation’s living presidents united to affirm that all Americans bear responsibility for the well-being of our children and youth. On April 28, 1997 at that historic assembly in Philadelphia, Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, with Mrs. Nancy Reagan representing President Reagan, declared: "We owe a debt of service to fulfill the God-given promise of America, and our children." America's Promise Alliance will officially celebrate its 15th anniversary on April 27, but will continue to highlight accomplishments and challenges faced during the past 15 years during 2012. The Afterschool Alliance works to ensure all children have access to affordable, quality afterschool programs. This spring they’ve released their fourth annual MetLife Foundation/Afterschool Alliance Issue Brief Compendium, entitled “Afterschool in Action: How Innovative Afterschool Programs Address Critical Issues Facing Middle School Youth.” The Alliance is also gearing up for their 11th annual Afterschool for All Challenge in Washington, D.C., from May 8-9. Registration is still open for the Challenge, which brings together program staff, community leaders, youth, parents, educators, advocates and elected officials from across the country to discuss the hottest topics in afterschool and meet face to face with policy makers to discuss the importance of federal support for afterschool programs.

The Mobile County Education Commission, which is part of the larger MAEF, strives to ensure that every child in Mobile County is prepared for entrance into college or a career upon high school graduation.

A new national survey of 2,252 youth age 8-18 on character and citizenship, conducted for National Boys & Girls Club Week 2012 (April 15-21), shows the youth of our country are very concerned about issues of character and citizenship. While many candidates and pundits during this election cycle have downplayed the importance of character, the survey results show youth consider “good character and strong ethics” to be the top attribute of a U.S. President.

America’s Promise Alliance has signed on to support the formation of the Presidential Youth Council. The Presidential Youth Council, comprised of young Americans ages 16-24, will advise the President on the perspectives of youth, offer suggestions on how to make federally funded youth programs more efficient and effective, and will create shared recommendations on issues that will affect the long-term future of our country.

On April 28, 1997 at an historic and unprecedented assembly in Philadelphia, Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Harold Ford, with Mrs. Nancy Reagan representing President Reagan, declared: “We owe a debt of service to fulfill the God-given promise of America, and our children.” America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth was born at that assembly and has transformed over the years from a clarion call to action into a national movement of dedicated Americans working together to help millions of young people achieve their full potential. America’s Promise Alliance will officially celebrate its 15th anniversary on April 27.
